This Cajun Shrimp recipe offers a flavorful and quick meal that combines juicy shrimp, bold Cajun seasoning, and a creamy sauce. With a perfect balance of heat and richness, this dish features tender shrimp cooked in a savory sauce made with butter, garlic, and a hint of lime. Ready in under 30 minutes, it’s an ideal choice for a weeknight dinner or a weekend gathering. Serve it with rice, beans, or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal. Perfect for those who love bold flavors and simple, delicious seafood dishes.

Ingredients

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 lb. uncooked shrimp (see notes)
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth
  • ¾ cup heavy cream (can substitute with half and half)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 10 oz. Rotel diced tomatoes with green chilies (reserve juice)
  • ¾ cup shredded cheddar jack cheese (see notes)
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice

For the Seasonings:

  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (light)
  • ½ teaspoon each: mustard powder, oregano
  • 1 pinch each: cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes

For Serving:

  • Lime wedges
  • Fresh cilantro, roughly chopped

Instructions

Prep Work:

  1. Thaw the shrimp completely (if frozen) and pat them dry. Remove the shell, tail, and veins if necessary.
  2. Drain and reserve the juice from the diced tomatoes (about ¼ cup). This will be used to deglaze the skillet after cooking the shrimp.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the chicken broth, heavy cream, honey, hot sauce, and seasonings. Set aside.

Cook the Shrimp:

  1. Sprinkle the shrimp with Cajun seasoning.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and diced red bell pepper. Cook for about 1 minute and 20 seconds on each side (use a timer to avoid overcooking). Remove the shrimp and peppers from the skillet and set aside. They will cook a bit more while resting and when added to the sauce.

Make the Sauce:

  1. Add the reserved juice from the diced tomatoes to the skillet. Set the heat to medium. Use a silicone spatula to scrape up any bits from the bottom of the pan. Reduce the liquid by half.
  2. Add butter and garlic to the skillet, cooking for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Gradually add the chicken broth mixture in small splashes, stirring continuously.
  5. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Add the diced tomatoes and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. During this time, the sauce will thicken and the flavors will develop.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded cheese, stirring until melted and smooth. Slowly stir in the lime juice.
  7. Return the shrimp and peppers to the skillet, stirring to combine. Add the lime wedges to the skillet, then remove from heat. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro.

Serve with rice, beans, or a salad for a complete meal.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Bold and Flavorful: The combination of Cajun seasoning, garlic, and spicy hot sauce creates a rich, bold flavor that perfectly complements the shrimp.
  • Quick and Easy: Ready in less than 30 minutes, this recipe is perfect for a busy weeknight or a casual dinner party.
  • Creamy and Comforting: The creamy sauce with a hint of lime and cheddar jack cheese gives the dish a luxurious texture.
  • Customizable: Adjust the spice level and ingredients based on your preferences.

Tips

  • Shrimp Tips: Make sure the shrimp are completely thawed and patted dry to prevent excess moisture during cooking.
  • Don’t Overcook the Shrimp: Overcooked shrimp can become tough and rubbery. Keep a close eye on the cooking time.
  • Thickening the Sauce: The flour in the sauce helps thicken it, but if the sauce is too thick, add a little more chicken broth to reach your desired consistency.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Spicy Level: Increase or decrease the amount of hot sauce and cayenne pepper to adjust the heat to your preference.
  • Cream Substitutes: For a lighter version, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream. Alternatively, coconut milk can be used for a dairy-free version.
  • Cheese Variations: Substitute the cheddar jack cheese with mozzarella or pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  • Vegetarian Option: Skip the shrimp and substitute with tofu or a medley of vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and mushrooms for a hearty vegetarian dish.

FAQs

Q: Can I use frozen shrimp? A: Yes, just make sure to thaw the shrimp completely before cooking. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Q: What if I don’t have Cajun seasoning? A: You can make your own Cajun seasoning by combining paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, cayenne pepper, and black pepper.

Q: Can I make this dish ahead of time? A: While the shrimp is best served fresh, you can prepare the sauce ahead of time and reheat it when ready to serve. Just add the shrimp and continue the cooking process.

Q: How do I store leftovers? A: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop.
